What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a dental device that is used to replace a missing tooth or to serve as an anchor for dentures. The implant consists of a metal post that is implanted into the jawbone where it acts as an artificial root. The post is made of titanium, a metal that is used in many other types of prosthetics as well, including artificial joints. In implant supported bridges and dentures, the post serves as an anchor to keep the denture or bridge securely in place. When replacing a lost tooth, implant abutment is placed on the implant and serves as a connector for a crown.

What steps are involved in getting a dental implant?

Replacing missing tooth or teeth consists of two phases: a Surgical Phase and a Prosthetic (or Restorative) Phase.

Step 1 – Surgical Phase, Dental implant placement

During Surgical Phase, performed by our top Manhattan implant specialist, Dr. Jin Wang, the implant (a titanium artificial root) is placed in the jawbone. It replaces the root of the missing tooth and fuses with the bone in a process called “osseointegration.” If your jaw doesn’t have sufficient bone to support the implant, a bone graft may be used to augment the bone. The graft can be placed along with the implant.

Step 2 – Restorative Phase, Dental implant prosthesis placement

A few weeks or months will pass before the implant is ready for Restorative Phase. At this stage, the implant abutment is placed on the implant, and a 3D scan is made. The scan is sent to the lab where custom implant crown, denture or bridge are fabricated. Then the final prosthesis is inserted and adjusted for a comfortable fit.

Can I get Dental Implants Same Day?

Depending on the health of the bone the same day dental implants can be done during extraction visit. This procedure is called immediate implant placement. upon your initial consultation, our dental implant specialist will determine if you are a candidate for same day dental implants.

Delayed implant placement takes place three to six months after the extraction. Usually, the reason for delayed implant placement is either severe infection or lack of bone that has to be rebuilt.

What are my options to close the gap while my implant is healing?

At 209 NYC dental we provide several options for a temporary missing tooth replacement:

  • Removable flipper
  • Bonded fake tooth
  • Removable denture, in case, if multiple teeth are missing

Either of this options is popular among our patients.

How long do implants last?

When properly cared for, implants can last as long as natural teeth, or longer. Although the implant and implant restoration can’t become decayed, the gum surrounding the implant is still susceptible to periodontal disease. Regular brushing and dental cleaning and checkups are still necessary to ensure your implants remain in good shape.

Dental Implants vs. Bridges

There are supporting reasons why implants are a better choice than fixed bridges:

The cost of the replacement of missing teeth depends on the number of teeth being replaced. If restoring a single tooth the cost of the implant placement and restoration with abutment and crown will be the same as the expense of placing the ceramic bridge making dental implants affordable even in Manhattan.

A bridge necessitates “cutting down” adjacent teeth (even if they are healthy) for crowns (abutments that will support pontic, tooth replacing missing tooth). Implant eliminates the need of filing healthy teeth.

With a bridge, some of the bone that previously surrounded the tooth that is now missing begins to resorb (degenerate). Dental implants fuse with your jawbone, helping it stay healthy.

In the long-term, an implant restoration is more esthetic and more durable. The teeth supporting the bridge can decay, the gums will eventually recede around a bridge, and the bone loss may progress

Dental Implants vs. Removable Dentures

Implants can now support even complete dentures in what is called an implant supported denture (also known as overdenture, all-on-4 or all-on-8).

Removable dentures are an inexpensive and quick solution to replacing missing teeth. If finances are a big concern, a removable denture is a solution.

When there is missing tooth the bone that once supported it starts to shrink contributing to bone loss. The more missing teeth one may have the less bone there is. Bone loss contributes to poor fitting of the traditional removable dentures, full or partial. Dental implants when placed in the jawbone stop bone loss by simulating the roots of natural teeth.

With dental implants, forget about unsightly partial denture clasps, which place damaging pressure on remaining natural teeth.
Dental implants serve as anchors for a full denture, providing stability and functionality with no limitations. No adhesive is required anymore, and you can eat any meal you like and enjoy it.

Some patients experience difficulty speaking with the dentures, or they sound different. Speaking is no longer affected when you have an implant supported denture.

To be able to stay in the mouth full upper denture is constructed with palate covered. Some people may experience gagging reflex; others may have an enlarged torus. In either case, wearing a full denture becomes very difficult. Implant supported dentures may be constructed to look like bridges with very little of artificial tissue. Thus no gagging will never be an issue.

Although proper oral care is crucial to maintaining good dental health, it is especially important when a patient has had dental implants. Bacteria can accumulate in the mouth and may cause gums to swell and jaw bone to recede. The recession of the jawbone will weaken implants and eventually make it necessary for the implant to be removed. Patients are recommended to have their regular dental cleaning at least twice a year to ensure the health of their teeth and implants. Our dental hygienists are well trained in dental implants maintenance.
