Family Dentist in NYC
What happens during a family dental checkup?
At 209 NYC Dental, we offer both adult and pediatric patients the most comprehensive dental checkups to help ensure any oral health issues, no matter how minor, is caught in its earliest and most treatable stages. Both adult and pediatric checkups begin with a medical history to look for any issues that could increase the risk of dental diseases, including diabetes, which can actually increase the risks for both tooth decay and gum disease. Patients also will be asked about any symptoms or problems they’ve been experiencing. The checkup will begin with a visual examination of the teeth and gums, followed by a cleaning and possibly dental x-rays. Next, each tooth will be carefully evaluated for signs of decay and your gums will be examined for gum disease. An oral cancer screening will also be performed. Then, you’ll learn about any problems you’re facing as well as your treatment options, and of course, you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions. Finally, you will be instructed as to how to brush, what toothbrush, what rinse and what floss. Will go over diet, exercise and the elimination of unwanted habits such as smoking and excessive drinking.
How often should I see the dentist? How about my child?
The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend both adults and children visit the dentist every six months to have dental checkups and routine cleanings.
What can I do between six-month checkups to help my teeth and gums stay healthy?
Between visits, be sure to brush and floss regularly using the techniques recommended by the hygienist during your cleaning. Try to limit sugary snacks and drinks since oral bacteria thrive on sugars. Use a mouthguard if your play sports and a night guard if you grind your teeth during sleep. Don’t use your teeth as prying tools, and avoid chewing on ice and hard candy, which can crack or chip teeth and damage restorations. Always remember to smile.
