What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures are a modern solution for those suffering from significant tooth loss. They combine the security of dental implants with the aesthetics of custom-made prosthetics. Unlike traditional removable dentures that rest on the gums, these are anchored directly and securely to your jawbone using several dental implants, which act as strong, artificial tooth roots.

Unlike traditional removable dentures, implant dentures are anchored into the jawbone to help maintain jawbone and facial structure, similar to natural teeth.

The Life-Changing Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures

The decision to move forward with implant treatment is an investment in your quality of life. Patients who choose implant supported dentures enjoy benefits that go far beyond just aesthetics.

  • Secure, Comfortable Fit: No more slipping or adhesives—just confidence during meals, meetings, or laughter.
  • Improved Chewing Power: Enjoy steak, apples, and favorite foods again with up to 90% natural bite strength.
  • Better Speech & Appearance: Speak clearly and smile confidently without clicking or sunken facial features.
  • Bone Preservation: Implants support the jawbone and prevent the bone loss that occurs with missing teeth.
  • Support for Overall Health: Restore your diet with fiber-rich, nutritious foods for better full-body wellness.
  • Simple Maintenance: No soaking or paste—just brush like natural teeth.
  • Long-Term Value: While the initial cost is higher, they last longer and reduce future replacement needs.

Types of Implant Dentures

At 209 NYC Dental, we offer solutions for both full-arch and partial tooth loss. They fall into two primary types: implant-retained (removable) and implant-supported (fixed) prosthesis. Each offers unique advantages based on your needs, bone structure, and lifestyle, and both can be used to restore several missing teeth or an entire arch.

Fixed Implant Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures are fully supported by 4–8 dental implants and are screwed into your jawbone, offering maximum stability and function. They do not touch the gum tissue and are only removable by your dentist, hence they are often called permanent or fixed dentures.

Key Features:

  • Permanently secured with 4–8 implants per arch
  • Not removable by patient; only by your dentist
  • Common systems: All-on-4, All-on-X, zirconia hybrid dentures

Implant Supported Dentures are Best for:

  • Patients with healthy jawbone density
  • Those seeking a permanent solution that looks and feels natural

Removable Implant-Retained Dentures

Often called “snap-in” or “snap on dentures” this option provides a dramatic increase in stability. Your denture clips securely onto several dental implants but can be removed at home for easy cleaning. It’s an excellent and accessible solution for eliminating looseness.

Key Features:

  • Held in place by 2–4 implants
  • Removed daily for cleaning
  • Common systems: Snap-in dentures using locator attachments, Bar-retained overdentures clipped onto a support bar

Implant-Retained Dentures are Best for:

  • Patients transitioning from conventional dentures
  • Budget-conscious patients
  • Patients with moderate bone loss

Fixed vs. Removable Implant Dentures

When deciding between implant denture types, it often comes down to your goals, budget, and oral health. This comparison highlights the key differences so you can make an informed decision in partnership with your dentist.

Feature Removable Implant Dentures Fixed Implant Dentures
Support Implants + gums Fully implant-supported
Removability Yes No
Implants Needed 2–4 per arch 4–8 per arch
Chewing Efficiency Good Excellent (up to 90%)
Bone Preservation Moderate Excellent
Cost Lower Higher
Maintenance Removed daily Brushed like natural teeth
Best For Affordability Permanence & stability
Lifespan 5–10 years 10–20+ years

In short, fixed dentures offer maximum stability and long-term benefits, while removable options provide affordability and easier maintenance for those with less bone support.

When Are Dentures with Implants Recommended?

Dentures with implants are typically recommended if you want to replace missing teeth with a more stable, natural-feeling solution:

  • Are missing most or all of their teeth in the upper or lower arch
  • Experience loose or painful conventional dentures
  • Seek a more stable, comfortable, and natural-feeling alternative
  • Want to preserve facial structure and prevent jawbone deterioration

Many of our patients are busy NYC professionals, retirees, or individuals who value convenience, aesthetics, and function. If you want to regain your smile with a solution that mimics natural teeth, implant supported dentures may be your best option.

Here is your step by step guide to your treatment process:

1. Initial Consultation

The initial consultation is a critical first step in the process. During this appointment:

  • Dr. Ifraimov or Dr. Wang will review your medical history.
  • They will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth.
  • This helps determine your suitability for dental implant surgery.
  • Our dentist will tailor the treatment plan to your specific needs.

During the consultation, the dentist will discuss the implant process, including the steps involved in the procedure, potential complications, and expected outcomes. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and address any concerns you may have. The goal is to ensure that you are well-informed and comfortable with the upcoming procedures.

2. Implant Placement Process

The dental implant surgery is typically done in our comfortable office with local anesthesia. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. The implants are placed precisely using our digital planning, and most people return to normal activities within a few days.

3. Healing & Osseous integration

Healing usually takes 3-4 months as the implants bond with your jawbone. During this time, you’ll have a temporary denture so you’re never without teeth. Some patients actually prefer their temporary denture to their old traditional dentures because even the temporary version has better retention.

3. Second surgery

Second surgery may be required depending on the implant system used. This follow-up procedure typically involves exposing the tops of the implants to attach healing caps or abutments, preparing the site for the permanent denture placement. This is a minor procedure that doesn’t require the same healing time.

4. Final Restoration

Once your implants have healed, we’ll create your final implant supported denture. This process involves several appointments to ensure perfect fit, comfort, and appearance. The denture attaches securely to your implants, and you’ll learn how to care for your new teeth.

The adjustment period is shorter than traditional dentures due to the secure, gum-friendly fit.

As I walked into Dr. Wang for the initial surgical part of two implants I felt relaxed and enjoyed the environment in his room.

Two teeth had to be removed and thereafter the necessary procedure to follow. At no time did I feel uncomfortable and the process was conducted without me feeling any pain. No need for any pain killers after the surgery as well.

Having had similar procedures prior in other places, this was by far the most professional and efficient.

Dr. Wang has a great personality and charm and makes you feel good.

I highly recommend to have your dental surgical needs performed by Dr. Wang.

209 NYC dental is a very fine complete dental institution with a friendly and professional staff.

Kjell Wikestam

Amazing Dental Implants experience. Dr. Wang has great bedside manners. He is very gentle, patient and thoroughly explained the procedure. He set my mind at ease. His professionalism, skills and care are second to none. The surgery was done in a timely and precise manner, I didn’t even realize it was over. I had little to no discomfort after the surgery. Highly recommended.

S.

Miraculous! Extraction and dental implant with no swelling or pain. Thank you so much.

Edward Reiner

I’ve now had three extractions and implants with Dr. Wang and I highly commend both his dental and people skills. He’s straightforward and engaging, and accurately previews the procedures and how they’ll feel, and what the results will be. The amazing thing about the implants is that in each case they have felt completely natural at the completion of the process. A true professional and a pleasure to deal with, and the results speak for themselves.

David L

Dr. Wang was very professional, and took his time explaining the implant procedure. He always made himself available , if I needed to express my concerns, or worries. I highly recommend him.

FAQ about Dentures with Implants

What are implant-supported dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are securely anchored to the jawbone with dental implants, offering stability that closely resembles natural tooth roots. This solution enhances comfort and functionality for those seeking a reliable option for tooth replacement.

How long does the implant to denture process take?

Treatment typically takes 3–6 months from implant placement to final denture, depending on healing and bone health.

Will I need several procedures to get dentures with implants?

Possibly. Some patients may need bone grafting, extractions, or sinus lifts before implants can be placed. We personalize every treatment plan based on your needs.

What is Recovery from Dental Implant Surgery Really Like?

The fear of a painful recovery is common, but modern techniques have made it much more manageable than most patients expect. You can anticipate some manageable discomfort, bruising, and swelling for a few days, similar to other dental procedures. Most patients control this easily with prescription and over-the-counter pain relievers and are back to their normal routines within about one week.

Will I be without teeth during healing?

No. A temporary denture is provided for aesthetics and function.

How do I care for my implant supported dentures?

To effectively care for your implant supported dentures, brush them twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive cleaner, floss daily, and ensure you schedule regular dental check-ups. This routine will help maintain their condition and your oral health.

Is fixed bridgework the same as implant dentures?

Not exactly. Fixed bridgework typically relies on adjacent natural teeth for support, while implant-supported dentures anchor directly into the jawbone using dental implants.

Can I get a fixed partial dentures?

Yes. Patients missing several teeth in a jaw are good candidates for a fixed partial denture. A general dentist or oral surgeon will evaluate your oral health and discuss the best options.

Can traditional dentures cause bone damage?

Yes. Because they rest on the gums without stimulating the bone, traditional dentures can lead to bone loss over time.

Will implant dentures affect my other teeth?

No. In fact, they help protect your remaining natural teeth by eliminating the need for them to support a bridge or partial denture.

Testimonials

I was very lucky to have had a referral for this Dental Practice. From the wonderful staff at the front desk, who were very helpful and those who checked on my insurance to see if I was covered and this was all before I even had the actual appointment. This was my first time for a visit and I was greeted as if I had been going there forever. I was informed of what to expect and after I filled out my paperwork a lovely young lady came so I could have my x-rays which went well; then the hygienist came and got me - she looked over my x-rays and asked me some questions and then proceeded to clean my teeth. She did a wonderful job. Then the dentist came in for further examination and discussion of what my next steps should be. He was a wonderful doctor. This was a wonderful experience. Before today I was with the same dentist office for approximately 40 years and always adored them unfortunately, they retired. So, I am extremely thrilled to have found such a wonderful dental office and staff at 209 NYC Dental. I look forward to building a lasting relationship.
